Pet friendly hotels

You'd be surprised at how many hotel chains, large and small, are now becoming pet-friendly hotels and welcoming your pets with open arms. Because we can't bear to leave our pets behind when we take a driving vacation, more of us are traveling with pets and taking our dogs along to these pet-friendly hotels. Today, traveling with pets is actually easier than you think because so many hotel chains now embrace pet visits.

Here are five helpful hints on pet-friendly hotels:

1. Choose your favorite type of pet-friendly hotel or accommodations. Once limited to camping grounds, there is now an ever-growing list of hotels, resorts, vacation rentals, restaurants, beaches, parks, and more that welcome your pet for the night.

2. Make a reservation well in advance. During the peak summer travel season from Memorial Day through Labor Day, tens of millions of pet lovers like you are traveling with pets during vacation. So call a pet-friendly hotel and ask if they accommodate pets when you make your reservation. If they do, they'll usually charge a small supplemental fee for the night - in most cases, an extra $10 or $20, depending on your dog's weight - in case of an accident.

3. Ask for a first floor room. To make it easier for you to walk Fido, Fifi or Fred when traveling with pets, request a first floor room so you don't waste time in elevators or stairs when getting your dog to the accompanying hotel grounds. Some pet-friendly hotels even have grassy pet-walking areas, pooper scoopers or baggies to take care of the "business."

4. Ask for a discount. What's better than finding a pet-friendly hotel? Finding one and receiving a discount for the room! Many pet-friendly hotels offer discounts to AARP, AAA, and members of other organizations, as well as discounts found in The Entertainment Book, so it never hurts to ask.

5. Call pet-friendly hotels that are national chains. Did you know that La Quinta, Marriott, Red Roof Inn, Motel 6 and other national chains are all pet-friendly hotels? This makes it much easier if you'll be traveling with pets for a few weeks or longer because you can book your next night's or week's room from your morning’s room as you map out your trip.
